ATK contest - guide to my confusing links

Yayyy! I finished ATK round 2! For those of you who haven't seen it yet, ATK (Amaranthine Tea Kettle) :iconamaranthineteakettle: is an awesome contest run by :iconthaliathetiger: (who is an amazing literature-manga-artist: and her roomie :iconchibisilverwings: which is SO much fun! In it, contestants enter their original characters, who are matched up with other entrants' characters in sets of 2, and each person in the duo has to write or draw a piece depicting their character winning victory over (or allying with) their opponent's. Battles can take place on a huge number of creatively-planned worlds (including Crayon World (which is just what it sounds), an asylum, and a Mummy-style tomb! And the final goal is... a magical tea kettle. So of course I had to enter! :D

All the characters so far have rocked, and I love reading everyone's entries!

I really can't decide who I hope wins in this round - me, or my opponent! :) Of course I want to win, this contest rocks, but since I have school coming up, I wouldn't mind just becoming a spectator... and I REALLY want to see more of Andrew and Votch! The really awesome thing would be if we tied... but I don't think we can :) Oh well - it's up to the judges! I can't wait for Friday... *bites nails*

But anyway, I just thought I'd put this stuff up on a journal entry to keep it all organized, and advertise the awesomeness of the contestants (and plug mine too, of course, lol :) ) Seriously, check out the contest page. There are some amazing entries!

HI all! I haven't posted much in a while, but I can't wait for the ATK contest and to put up a lot more photos I've been taking! I just had an operation a few days ago, so I've been in bed for a while, but that means more time to look at art - and I've seen so many wonderful pieces! I commented on most, but I favorited one that a haiku artist created, and he asked me my thoughts behind favoriting it. That made me think, about the kind of art I love, what I love about art, and why I want to create art. My answer was...
I loved the beauty of the words... each haiku expressed a single moment, so small that many wouldn't notice it, the kind we experience and pass by every day, but what I love about art - like your poem, like my friends' paintings, and like what I hope to do in my photographs - is that it calls up these small moments to the conscious mind, lifts them to our awareness and as they rise to realization, we notice how beautiful and truly interesting they are. The world, all of life, is filled with these amazing moments - what I love about art, is it helps us realize that, and see it - and that makes life beautiful.

I want to thank all the artists for making the world more visible and more beautiful... you reveal what we love about life, and what makes us human.

These are some of the character's I've been working on lately - I thought I'd do this to develop them a little more - never too much character development! :) Here's the five. Feel free to comment!

Characters Chosen:

1. Idesta (A Thorn Defends, my Snow White reimagining) She’s a young ruler-witch with a special connection to plants – she can see from their perspective, and make them grow. Hardened by her struggles with the power-hungry lords of the land after her father’s death, she doesn’t trust easily, becoming jealous and obsessive of what she loves. She protects her sister, Rhosyneva, above all, though she is also fiercely jealous of her.

2. Rhosyneva (A Thorn Defends) She’s Idesta’s sweet princess-sister, who loves flowers but hates gardening, and falls tumbling into puppy-love with Idesta’s new advisor, Gerel. She’s childlike, kind, and innocent, entirely unaware of the complex power-structures that make their kingdom stand.

3. Sierre (Light Borne, my fantasy-adventure work) She’s a spirited princess with a unique ability – she’s the only one who can find the Trulighte crystals that power their desert-blown nomadic town. When she returns from a search to find her village gone, she sets off on a quest to rescue her people. She’s very optimistic and determined.

4. Tanne (Light Borne) He’s Sierre’s companion on the quest, a woodcrafter’s apprentice, who’s driven, competitive, and wracked with guilt over his secret role in the tragedy that took their land.

5. Jezabel (Bloodstains/Water Clears Us, my Lady Macbeth-spin) An ambitious free spirit with a prostitute/revolutionary parent who’s been imprisoned for conspiring against the government, she charges through life as a feisty fighter kid before she learns to manipulate in subtler ways.

1) How old are you?

Idesta: It’s not your concern. *glares*
Rhosyneva: *blushes* I’m sixteen… and, she’s twenty-one. But she’s not too young – she’s helped the kingdom since she was 14! *smiles up at Idesta*
Sierre: I’ve passed eighteen years.
Tanne: I’m sixteen.
Jezabel: Why should I tell you? I’m old enough - that’s all you’ve got to know.


2) Height?

Idesta: *narrows her eyes suspiciously* Why are you asking me?
Rhosyneva: I’m 5’1, and she’s 5’9. I don’t know where she got so tall… *blinks* My parents weren’t that tall.
Sierre: *hefts bag of jewels* It depends on whether I’m carrying this. Without it, I must be 5’6. With it… 5’3. I have to bend over a little to hold them all.
Tanne: I’m not sure… I’m not as tall as some of the other apprentices. But I can craft better than Ben! *shows off carving*
Jezabel: 5’1. But I can beat you up however tall you are!

3) You got any bad habits?

Idesta: *listens to the Duke/mirror laughing derisively* I know. I will not be reminded.
Rhosyneva: She’s wonderful… but she’s too overprotective. And she gets jealous. And works too much. And she doesn’t like to have fun. But she likes flowers! *beams*
Sierre: *looks up from her excavation of the sand* Oh! Er… I become too absorbed in the search. I do not always return in time… I should have known better last search. *her face darkens* I sensed something coming…
Tanne: She can’t blame herself! She’s our princess, she has saved our city countless times… she’s the only reason we’ve gotten this far. She doesn’t know what I’ve done… bad habits, that’s not even the start… *notices Sierre looking in his direction* Er… I can’t. I can’t say. I’m sorry, Sierre. *looks back at interviewer* But she has no bad habits. Except… trusting too much. *looks down* :(
Jezabel: That guy does nothing but feel guilty. Whose purpose does that serve? Not his – not his friend’s! I don’t know what happened, but I can guess – some plan from the people in power, it has to be. Making the regular citizens flail and fall for the rulers’ corruption. I won’t fall for that. My habits help me survive. I fight a lot – and I lie when I need to.

4) You a virgin?

Idesta: I am. And ‘Neva, I can answer for myself. I’ve told you, never trust strangers.
Rhosyneva: It’s alright, ‘Desta! They’re nice. And of course I am! I’m a princess, after all.
Sierre: Yes! I have no mate yet, nor desire one. My mate is the country – I must fulfill my responsibilities to my land.
Tanne: *blushes* Er, um, yes…. *turns red*
Jezabel: *clenches fists* What if I am? Purity is defined by the elite. If I am or not, I’m not bound by their rules. You can take your definitions and…. *voice trails off, muffled* Hey! *glares at author* You can’t censor me!


5) Who's your mate/spouse?

Idesta: …No one. I cannot afford to risk another power struggle. I will rule, as I have been ruling. I’ve told them, my father was the king. I will have none other take his place – and I can handle this myself.
Rhosyneva: *sighs dreamily* Gerel, someday. I don’t know why Idesta sent me away from him!
Sierre: None yet - I answered that in the last question.
Tanne: *blushes* No one.
Jezabel: When I find a match, it will be one I can use to further my ambitions. I won’t accept else.

6) Have any kids?

Idesta: I keep no baby goats. Children? Of course not – I have the land and my plants to look after – and ‘Neva.
Rhosyneva: *giggles* Of course not, silly.
Sierre: No, I am not of age. And I have not found a mate.
Tanne: No. I’m not of age.
Jezabel:*in a daze* I have given suck and know
/How tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me:/I would, while it was smiling in my face/Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums/
And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you… Wait, what? No, I’ve got no kids!

7) Favorite food?

Idesta: The fruit from my trees and my vines is the best on the earth. I won’t eat any other. And I will eat no slain creature.
Rhosyneva: I like ‘Desta’s fruits… but not her vegetables. I don’t like vegetables. But she’s a vegetarian, so she does. But I like… oooh, pastries are nice!
Sierre: Preri fish… mmm.
Tanne: I like prer’eet fowl. But don’t tell Sierre!
Jezabel: Boar. I had it at the king’s table, and it was perfect. Soon, I’ll eat it daily.

8) Favorite ice cream flavor?

All: *blink* What?


10) Hate anyone?

Idesta: The duke. He caused my father’s death, then tried to take the kingdom. I would not, and did not, let him do so. But now he haunts me… as my “magic mirror.”
Rhosyneva: I don’t think so – I hope not! No, I don’t!
Sierre: Vrakhos will fall, and my people will be restored!
Tanne: Raas. I thought he was my mentor, but he betrayed - no, I betrayed. My betrayal was greater, but I should never have let myself be led by him.
Jezabel: Macara. *seethes* And the king. The whole royal family. And… *continues*


11) Any secrets?

Idesta: Many. None that I would disclose.
Rhosyneva: My sister thinks Hunterius took me to our cousin’s – but I left. I was scared in the forest, but a kind old man rescued me, and now I live with him and his brothers. The townspeople say they’re a cult – I don’t know what that means, but it’s bad – but they’re not! They’re all very nice people. They’re just really messy.
Sierre: Partway through the quest, I lost my ability to Search. Tanne knows, but no one else.
Tanne: *closes eyes* Yes. And I can never tell her.
Jezabel: None that I’d tell you!


12) Love anyone?

Idesta: I love my sister, and will protect her above all. Otherwise? I have no use for romantic entanglements. *shuffles papers belonging to Gerel*
Rhosyneva: I love my prince, Gerel, and someday we’ll be together. And… *looks timidly at Idesta* I think Idesta loves someone, but I can’t tell who.
Sierre: I love my people, and my father, King Traeont. And my good friend, Tanne.
Tanne: *blushes* Um… I love, but… it could never be… *tiny voice, whispers* Sierre?
Jezabel: I loved Sim. Didn’t realize it til after he was gone. And now – I’m not loving anyone else, not so they can use it against me. I’ll make others love me, and then I’ll use that against them.


13) TACOS?

All: *collective head tilt*


14) Ever slept in all day?

Idesta: Never. I rise with my plants, at the sun.
Rhosyneva: Well… yes… *smiles* but it is fun to be lazy sometimes!
Sierre: I rise when the Trulighte calls. I’ve never slept past the morning.
Tanne: After I finished working on my last piece for my mentor… but I’m never doing that again.
Jezabel: No way! Think you can sleep when… yeah. I haven’t.

15) Favorite show?

Idesta: I do not frequent the town theatres.
Rhosyneva: I saw a play once called Romeo and Juliet. It was beautiful, except the sad ending!
Sierre: The village jesters are wonderful!
Tanne: I always loved watching Red, the jester.
Jezabel: The traveling puppeteer.

17) Favorite band?

Idesta: I have a least favorite band – that band of corrupt politicos who tried to steal my land from me.
Rhosyneva: Um… I suppose I like that band of kids who’re always playing by the garden. They’re so much fun!
Sierre: There’s a group of beautifully talented musicians I love! The one who played the lute was called Shan…
Tanne: Any of the town musicians, I think.
Jezabel: My band of friends, before I went to the castle.


18) Eye Colours?

Idesta: Green. And no cracks about the green-eyed monster, or green thumbs. They’re green.
Rhosyneva: Blue.
Sierre: Brown-golden.
Tanne: Dark hazel.
Jezabel: Black.


19) Skin?

Idesta: I’m tanned, from being out in the sun with my plants.
Rhosyneva: Well, Gerel said it was white as snow. *giggles* He’s silly.
Sierre: We’re all tanned – we live in the desert.
Tanne: Sierre’s right.
Jezabel: Pale.


20) Fat/Average/Slim?

Idesta: Slim, like my vines. I’ve always grown “like a weed” – thin, tall, and tenacious. I may be young, might be slight – but do not doubt my strength.
Rhosyneva: Idesta says I’m curvaceous. What does curvaceous mean? Anyway, I suppose I’m in between. Idesta’s bone, though – she doesn’t eat much.
Sierre: Slim – I’m traveling constantly, so the winds have shaped me like those who are always on the move.
Tanne: Well… slim – but I’m still stronger than some of the other apprentices!
Jezabel: I never cared to label myself – but when I got to the palace, the maids all said I was skin-bone. Didn’t look so well in those fluffy dresses they put me in. But I don’t care. I don’t need puffs and pomp to look royal. It’s drive, not looks, that put you where you want to be. If you’re small, stand taller. That’s the only way to get what you want in this world.



21) Rain, sunshine?

Idesta: Rain, for my plants. I feel their thirst in my veins.
Rhosyneva: Sunshine! I love the outdoors.
Sierre: What is this rain? Oh… storms. Sandstorms? They block out the sun. Those have plagued us for long – stormless shine is much better.
Tanne: Sandstorms are a curse.
Jezabel: Rain is better. Strips down people’s fluff and flounce, washes them down to who they are, really. You’re never so clear as in the rain, and never so clean.


22) Pool, beach?

All: …..?


23) Camping, or staying home?

Idesta: Camping? If that means you’re asking the value of being outdoors versus indoors, why? They both have their place.
Rhosyneva: I like being outdoors much better. Idesta shuts herself up in the palace sometimes, but she’s out with her plants a lot. She can talk to them, and they answer. I wish I could. The flowers are so beautiful. I feel such love every time I see them, and when I step outside, we smile at each other. If that’s camping, I love camping.
Sierre: By camping, you mean traveling, with friends and family, from place to place? We all do this, every year, before Heatrise – everyone packs up and we move to a new area. Each country, each village does so. We all must, because of the storms. Before Trulighte, we had many feuds over settling locations, but since we have found our power source, we can move anywhere and find hospitable ground. Because of this, we have avoided the wars that plague much of the land – but others envy us for our sufficiency. We welcome others to our land, but keep able defense against those who would destroy. But we are a peaceful people. For long, we did not need to use our warring abilities. Then, when we needed them – we were not prepared. In a way, I have harmed Kirehle by bringing Trulighte. I never thought it would end out this way.
Tanne: Sierre saved us by bringing the Trulighte. It was our inability to respond to the threat – my cursed weakness, and others’ deceit – that caused our fall. But the main cause was elsewhere – the main cause was what I wrought.
Jezabel: I don’t know what camping is, but as they’ve seemed to say – camping’s what we do every day, we who can’t live rich. I like neither better – I’ve had both views. Wherever you live, what matters is knowing how to handle what’s around you. I know how.


24) Dog, cat?

Idesta: I favor cats over hounds. Cats keep to themselves, let few into their confidence. Hounds are too easily led.
Rhosyneva: I love all animals! Sometimes I think I can talk to them the way Idesta talks to plants… but I’m not sure yet. But when I’m outside, they come to me, and they don’t mind my touch. They’re all beautiful creatures!
Sierre: I do not know these creatures. But the dohn-striders are hardworking, dependable and sweet, the bayrans are full of life and energy, and the prer-eet birds communicate like no other creatures. I have always felt a special affection for the prer-eet birds – perhaps because, like me, they came to Kirehle from afar.
Tanne: In the land of the lord Ruste, I saw hounds for the first time. I liked them… and they came up to me, licked my face, smiled. With them, I felt as if I had never been a betrayer. If we get through this, if we rescue the people – we must – I think I will keep a hound with me, when we return. They are gentle, and do not know how to deceive.
Jezabel: I’ve seen dogs lick the blood of my friends from the streets. I could never like them. Cats catch the mice that would eat our food –

Idesta: Yes. I have.
Rhosyneva: When Idesta told me I couldn’t see Gerel anymore, I threw my vases against the wall. I’m sorry I did, now – the servant had to clear them up, and it was trouble for her. But I couldn’t stand to be without him, when we had only just found each other!
Sierre: I’ve seen the effects when others have done so – so as for me, I am determined not to succumb to destruction.
Tanne: *looks down* Yes.
Jezabel: Yes! Many times. I fought, and they knew who was stronger, even though they’d take my enemy’s side. But now I know other ways to win.


29) Any unusual things about you?

Idesta: I rule alone, and prefer plants to people. In the eyes of the envious landlords, that is enough to brand me a witch.
Rhosyneva: Well... *blushes* People have said I’m, um… unusually beautiful. But I don’t think they should like me better because of it! Everyone should love each other, and everyone’s beautiful. I think so, at least!
Sierre: I can sense Trulighte – an instinct, I suppose, like the bayrans do. But since I’m human, I am able to better seek it out. It helps my city, so I am happy.
Tanne: For some reason, I was sought out by Raas. He said it was because I was unique. I don’t want to be unique in that way! I want to be better – and I will be stronger. I won’t fall prey to that again.
Jezabel: I’ve had what some would call a strange life – most call me a bad seed. I’ve been blown about like one, to lots of places – but I take root just fine, and I can choke out the others that get in my way. I’m no weak flower.



30) How much food/drink do you need a day?

Idesta: My plants nourish me.
Rhosyneva: I ate three delicious meals a day in the palace – but now it’s different fare. Still tasty, though! And I like to cook.
Sierre: I eat a morning and evening meal, and one more midday if I’m guest at someone’s dwelling.
Tanne: I took bread and cheese to my work every day – a loaf and a round last me all right.
Jezabel: Whatever I can get. When it’s lavish, it’s grand – when it’s not, I’ll have stored up. Like I said, I take root anywhere.


31) Favourite place?

Idesta: My garden. Sometimes I think if I never ruled, I would stay there forever… but I must rule. But my plants hold me up. They’re the trees to my climbing vines.
Rhosyneva: I love the flower garden when it’s warm and blue, in the midst of the fragrance right under the sky. It’s beautiful!
Sierre: After a search, coming back to Kirehle, stepping through the gates onto the foot-trodden sand and seeing my people preparing for evening. There’s no feeling that’s better.
Tanne: In the field with a knife and a just-hewn limb of wood, carving smooth curves and holding my work in my hands. Knowing I’ve created what I wanted to.
Jezabel: With mam, before, or Sim. Now, in the throne room. By the king’s side, holding the banner, knowing that though I don’t hold the seat now, nor the crown – I will soon.

Idesta: I keep no baby goats. Children? Of course not – I have the land and my plants to look after – and ‘Neva.
Rhosyneva: *giggles* Of course not, silly.
Sierre: No, I am not of age. And I have not found a mate.

Idesta: The fruit from my trees and my vines is the best on the earth. I won’t eat any other. And I will eat no slain creature.
Rhosyneva: I like ‘Desta’s fruits… but not her vegetables. I don’t like vegetables. But she’s a vegetarian, so she does. But I like… oooh, pastries are nice!
Sierre: Preri fish… mmm.
Tanne: I like prer’eet fowl. But don’t tell Sierre!
Jezabel: Boar. I had it at the king’s table, and it was perfect. Soon, I’ll eat it daily.

Idesta: The duke. He caused my father’s death, then tried to take the kingdom. I would not, and did not, let him do so. But now he haunts me… as my “magic mirror.”
Rhosyneva: I don’t think so – I hope not! No, I don’t!
Sierre: Vrakhos will fall, and my people will be restored!
Tanne: Raas. I thought he was my mentor, but he betrayed - no, I betrayed. My betrayal was greater, but I should never have let myself be led by him.
Jezabel: Macara. *seethes* And the king. The whole royal family. And… *continues*


11) Any secrets?

Idesta: Many. None that I would disclose.
Rhosyneva: My sister thinks Hunterius took me to our cousin’s – but I left. I was scared in the forest, but a kind old man rescued me, and now I live with him and his brothers. The townspeople say they’re a cult – I don’t know what that means, but it’s bad – but they’re not! They’re all very nice people. They’re just really messy.
Sierre: Partway through the quest, I lost my ability to Search. Tanne knows, but no one else.
Tanne: *closes eyes* Yes. And I can never tell her.
Jezabel: None that I’d tell you!


12) Love anyone?

Idesta: I love my sister, and will protect her above all. Otherwise? I have no use for romantic entanglements. *shuffles papers belonging to Gerel*
Rhosyneva: I love my prince, Gerel, and someday we’ll be together. And… *looks timidly at Idesta* I think Idesta loves someone, but I can’t tell who.
Sierre: I love my people, and my father, King Traeont. And my good friend, Tanne.
Tanne: *blushes* Um… I love, but… it could never be… *tiny voice, whispers* Sierre?
Jezabel: I loved Sim. Didn’t realize it til after he was gone. And now – I’m not loving anyone else, not so they can use it against me. I’ll make others love me, and then I’ll use that against them.

Idesta: Never. I rise with my plants, at the sun.
Rhosyneva: Well… yes… *smiles* but it is fun to be lazy sometimes!

Tanne: After I finished working on my last piece for my mentor… but I’m never doing that again.
Jezabel: No way! Think you can sleep when… yeah. I haven’t.

Idesta: I do not frequent the town theatres.
Rhosyneva: I saw a play once called Romeo and Juliet. It was beautiful, except the sad ending!
Sierre: The village jesters are wonderful!

Tanne: Any of the town musicians, I think.
Jezabel: My band of friends, before I went to the castle.

Idesta: Green. And no cracks about the green-eyed monster, or green thumbs. They’re green.
Rhosyneva: Blue.
Sierre: Brown-golden.
Tanne: Dark hazel.
Jezabel: Black.

Idesta: I’m tanned, from being out in the sun with my plants.
Rhosyneva: Well, Gerel said it was white as snow. *giggles* He’s silly.
Sierre: We’re all tanned – we live in the desert.
Tanne: Sierre’s right.
Jezabel: Pale.


20) Fat/Average/Slim?

Idesta: Slim, like my vines. I’ve always grown “like a weed” – thin, tall, and tenacious. I may be young, might be slight – but do not doubt my strength.
Rhosyneva: Idesta says I’m curvaceous. What does curvaceous mean? Anyway, I suppose I’m in between. Idesta’s bone, though – she doesn’t eat much.
Sierre: Slim – I’m traveling constantly, so the winds have shaped me like those who are always on the move.
Tanne: Well… slim – but I’m still stronger than some of the other apprentices!
Jezabel: I never cared to label myself – but when I got to the palace, the maids all said I was skin-bone. Didn’t look so well in those fluffy dresses they put me in. But I don’t care. I don’t need puffs and pomp to look royal. It’s drive, not looks, that put you where you want to be. If you’re small, stand taller. That’s the only way to get what you want in this world.



21) Rain, sunshine?

Idesta: Rain, for my plants. I feel their thirst in my veins.
Rhosyneva: Sunshine! I love the outdoors.
Sierre: What is this rain? Oh… storms. Sandstorms? They block out the sun. Those have plagued us for long – stormless shine is much better.
Tanne: Sandstorms are a curse.
Jezabel: Rain is better. Strips down people’s fluff and flounce, washes them down to who they are, really. You’re never so clear as in the rain, and never so clean.

23) Camping, or staying home?

Idesta: Camping? If that means you’re asking the value of being outdoors versus indoors, why? They both have their place.
Rhosyneva: I like being outdoors much better. Idesta shuts herself up in the palace sometimes, but she’s out with her plants a lot. She can talk to them, and they answer. I wish I could. The flowers are so beautiful. I feel such love every time I see them, and when I step outside, we smile at each other. If that’s camping, I love camping.
Sierre: By camping, you mean traveling, with friends and family, from place to place? We all do this, every year, before Heatrise – everyone packs up and we move to a new area. Each country, each village does so. We all must, because of the storms. Before Trulighte, we had many feuds over settling locations, but since we have found our power source, we can move anywhere and find hospitable ground. Because of this, we have avoided the wars that plague much of the land – but others envy us for our sufficiency. We welcome others to our land, but keep able defense against those who would destroy. But we are a peaceful people. For long, we did not need to use our warring abilities. Then, when we needed them – we were not prepared. In a way, I have harmed Kirehle by bringing Trulighte. I never thought it would end out this way.
Tanne: Sierre saved us by bringing the Trulighte. It was our inability to respond to the threat – my cursed weakness, and others’ deceit – that caused our fall. But the main cause was elsewhere – the main cause was what I wrought.
Jezabel: I don’t know what camping is, but as they’ve seemed to say – camping’s what we do every day, we who can’t live rich. I like neither better – I’ve had both views. Wherever you live, what matters is knowing how to handle what’s around you. I know how.


24) Dog, cat?

Idesta: I favor cats over hounds. Cats keep to themselves, let few into their confidence. Hounds are too easily led.
Rhosyneva: I love all animals! Sometimes I think I can talk to them the way Idesta talks to plants… but I’m not sure yet. But when I’m outside, they come to me, and they don’t mind my touch. They’re all beautiful creatures!
Sierre: I do not know these creatures. But the dohn-striders are hardworking, dependable and sweet, the bayrans are full of life and energy, and the prer-eet birds communicate like no other creatures. I have always felt a special affection for the prer-eet birds – perhaps because, like me, they came to Kirehle from afar.
Tanne: In the land of the lord Ruste, I saw hounds for the first time. I liked them… and they came up to me, licked my face, smiled. With them, I felt as if I had never been a betrayer. If we get through this, if we rescue the people – we must – I think I will keep a hound with me, when we return. They are gentle, and do not know how to deceive.
Jezabel: I’ve seen dogs lick the blood of my friends from the streets. I could never like them. Cats catch the mice that would eat our food –

Idesta: Yes. I have.
Rhosyneva: When Idesta told me I couldn’t see Gerel anymore, I threw my vases against the wall. I’m sorry I did, now – the servant had to clear them up, and it was trouble for her. But I couldn’t stand to be without him, when we had only just found each other!
Sierre: I’ve seen the effects when others have done so – so as for me, I am determined not to succumb to destruction.
Tanne: *looks down* Yes.
Jezabel: Yes! Many times. I fought, and they knew who was stronger, even though they’d take my enemy’s side. But now I know other ways to win.


29) Any unusual things about you?

Idesta: I rule alone, and prefer plants to people. In the eyes of the envious landlords, that is enough to brand me a witch.
Rhosyneva: Well... *blushes* People have said I’m, um… unusually beautiful. But I don’t think they should like me better because of it! Everyone should love each other, and everyone’s beautiful. I think so, at least!
Sierre: I can sense Trulighte – an instinct, I suppose, like the bayrans do. But since I’m human, I am able to better seek it out. It helps my city, so I am happy.
Tanne: For some reason, I was sought out by Raas. He said it was because I was unique. I don’t want to be unique in that way! I want to be better – and I will be stronger. I won’t fall prey to that again.
Jezabel: I’ve had what some would call a strange life – most call me a bad seed. I’ve been blown about like one, to lots of places – but I take root just fine, and I can choke out the others that get in my way. I’m no weak flower.



30) How much food/drink do you need a day?

Idesta: My plants nourish me.
Rhosyneva: I ate three delicious meals a day in the palace – but now it’s different fare. Still tasty, though! And I like to cook.
Sierre: I eat a morning and evening meal, and one more midday if I’m guest at someone’s dwelling.
Tanne: I took bread and cheese to my work every day – a loaf and a round last me all right.
Jezabel: Whatever I can get. When it’s lavish, it’s grand – when it’s not, I’ll have stored up. Like I said, I take root anywhere.


31) Favourite place?

Idesta: My garden. Sometimes I think if I never ruled, I would stay there forever… but I must rule. But my plants hold me up. They’re the trees to my climbing vines.
Rhosyneva: I love the flower garden when it’s warm and blue, in the midst of the fragrance right under the sky. It’s beautiful!
Sierre: After a search, coming back to Kirehle, stepping through the gates onto the foot-trodden sand and seeing my people preparing for evening. There’s no feeling that’s better.
Tanne: In the field with a knife and a just-hewn limb of wood, carving smooth curves and holding my work in my hands. Knowing I’ve created what I wanted to.
Jezabel: With mam, before, or Sim. Now, in the throne room. By the king’s side, holding the banner, knowing that though I don’t hold the seat now, nor the crown – I will soon.
